About 52% of Malaysia population is Malay, 30% is Chinese, and 8% is Indian. The rest are indigenous people or non-Malays, mainly concentrated in the mountain area of the Peninsula, and many parts in East Malaysia. Malays are defined as Muslims in the constitution of Malaysia, and Malay is the national language. Indigeneous people, generally called Orang Asli make up more than half the population of Sarawak and Sabah, the two states in East Malaysia (Borneo Island). They are divided into many smaller ethnic groups, although many of them share a few same culture. Other non-Malay people consists of people originating from all over the world, including those of European, Middle Eastern, Cambodian, Vietnamese descents. Malaysia has seen a big rise in labour intensive industries, and have about 10 to 20 percent of illegal foreign workers mainly from Indonesia. According to the last census, the state of Sabah alone have 25% of its 3 million population listed as illegal foreign workers. Because of this multi-ethnic background, Malaysia celebrates a lot of cultural events and festivals. |
